In typical day to life, people use the term random to describe an event that was not expected. According to Wikipidia, randomness "is typically used to denote a lack of order, or purpose, or cause". Wikipedia describes the use of "random" in many different fields such as Physics, Biology, Finance, Mathematics, Religion, and more... Statistics is probably the most well-known use of the term. According to Wikipedia, "[t]he term [random] is often used in statistics to signify well-defined statistical properties, such as a lack of bias or correlation."

Buridan's Ass - if a mule were to have two stacks of hay, equally far apart, equal size, equal everything, which one would it choose? There is no favorite of one over the other. Would the mule starve to death because it has no logical reason to choose one over the other? The mule would have to make a truly random decision. This is assuming that the mule was not right or lefty, but each direction to itself was exactly the same.
